January 2005 Joshua 5:9 Then the Lord said to Joshua, "This day I have rolled away the reproach (the shame) of Egypt from you." Therefore the name of the place is called Gilgal (which means rolling) to this day. I heard this scripture and immediately had a picture of a large stone being rolled away and I thought: "The Lord's tomb stone was rolled away and just like God rolled away the reproach of Egypt on Joshua, He rolled it away permanently for us through His death and resurrection! Shame and reproach can plague Christians. In fact, sinners are far less likely to feel the guilt and shame of their past sins. It's the children of God that the devil comes after with unwarranted shame, reproach and guilt over our past. Once we receive the Lord, should we fall back into sin, we should feel shame and deep conviction over what we have done. However, the minute we repent, that sin, that reproach is washed away. Just like the day we receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior, we a made white as snow. The problem with shame is when the devil throws our past in our face through memories or people bringing up our past. Those memories and old stories can keep dragging us back to Egypt, the place of bondage and slavery. It seems like we get free and wham! we are thrown right back into bondage to guilt and shame over what we use to do. It seems like we will never get free. But, Jesus was beaten and spat upon and publically disgraced. All of our shame came upon Him. He carried that shame and broke it's hold upon us when He rose from the dead. Isaiah 50: 6-7 describes how Jesus defeated shame. If you have those nagging feelings of guilt, a whole in your heart where there is a constant sense of grief over the past, or you constantly ache to go back in time and redo your life...then it's time to once and for all accept what the shed blood of Jesus has done for you. You can boldly approach the throne of grace seeking mercy and grace in your time of need...and Jesus will not turn you away. Give your past over to Jesus. Leave the whole bag of junk at the foot of the cross. Walk away free knowing that it has been tossed into the sea of forgetfulness and the Father remembers it no more. He sees you through the blood and you are clean as the driven snow. Confidently arise from your place of prayer and go forth in power, knowing that no matter what the accuser of the brethren says to you, or what your friends and family may remind you of; YOU ARE NO LONGER THAT PERSON! YOU ARE A NEW CREATURE IN GOD! If you are accused or reminded, simply agree. Say, "Yes, I once was lost and did those things, but now I am found and I am free. I am no longer like I was in the past, I have been made new@" Start the New Year free of Egypt, Mighty warrior. Don't let shadowy memories of shame stop you from going forth to defeat the devil and his minions. Rise up, apply the blood, and go forth unashamed in the Lord Jesus Christ in prayer, intercession and spiritual warfare. Many blessings to you in 2005. Shalom- Cheryl |
