January 2006 "Now Joshua was dressed with filthy clothes as he stood before the angel." Zechariah 3:3 It's always good to reflect upon our spiritual condition. Each year we should be able to look back upon what we have experienced and rightly discern our relationship with God and our walk with Him. We should be better for our experiences and have a depth of faith to believe Him for more this year than the year before. We should be walking in more obedience and relying on Him more than ever before. Our love for Him should be deepening and widening as we learn more about Him and seek to know Him through His word. Yet so many in the body of Christ find themselves in Joshua's condition. We stand at the end of 2005 with the freshness of 2006 ahead of us and we discover upon reflection that instead of better we are bitter. Instead of abundance of faith, we have doubts. Rather than obedience, we see selfishness and even rebellion in our choices. The zeal for the word of God we once had has waned and we find ourselves sitting in complacency with our fire only smoldering coals. Maybe you just realized that your garments are filthy rags when compared to the glory and power the Lord has called you to. All of us have fallen short of the glory of God it says in Romans 3:23. It also says that the blood of Jesus was shed for us so that we continuously have access to the forgiveness of God...and at any time we can come to Him to get cleaned up. Joshua appeared before God standing in filthy rags. But the very next verse, where we might think that God would turn away or throw him out, instead the Lord blesses him! Zechariah 3: 4 - 7 "The angel said to those who were standing before him, “Take off his filthy clothes.” And to him he said, “See, I have taken your guilt away from you, and I will clothe you with festal apparel.” And I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him with the apparel; and the angel of the LORD was standing by. Then the angel of the LORD assured Joshua, saying “Thus says the LORD of hosts: If you will walk in my ways and keep my requirements, then you shall rule my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you the right of access among those who are standing here." No matter your spiritual condition, you can appear before God, repent of your sins and walk away with a clean garment of forgiveness, a clean turban to protect your mind, and direction for your future. In fact, like Joshua, if you will keep His commandments, then you will rule and reign with Christ Jesus. You will enter His courts and by His blood you will have access to the most holy place of His presence. Start your new year by searching your own heart and by letting the Holy Spirit reveal to you the condition of your soul... even the most diligent of us will find out we have need to boldly go to the throne of grace seeking His mercy and forgiveness. Even those of us who seek Him daily will find out He has something new to tell us for 2006. In His loving presence we will find peace and direction. Simcha Shalom, Cheryl (Rejoice in Peace) |
