The Land of Goshen Genesis 47:1 Then Yosef went in and told Pharaoh, "My father and brothers have come from the land of Kena'an with their flocks, livestock and all their possessions; right now they are in the land of Goshen." 2 He took five of his brothers and presented them to Pharaoh. 3 Pharaoh said to his brothers, "What is your occupation?" They answered Pharaoh, "Your servants are shepherds, both we and our ancestors," 4 and added, "We have come to live in the land, because in the land of Kena'an there is no place to pasture your servant's flocks, the famine is so severe there. Therefore, please, let your servants live in the land of Goshen." 5 Pharaoh said to Yosef, "Your father and brothers have come to you, 6 and the land of Egypt lies before you. Have your father and brothers live on the best property in the country - let them live in the land of Goshen. Moreover, if you know that some of them are particularly competent, put them in charge of my livestock." Exodus 8:21 Otherwise, if you won't let my people go, I will send swarms of insects on you, your servants and your people, and into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians will be full of swarms of insects, and likewise the ground they stand on. 22 But I will set apart the land of Goshen, where my people live -no swarms of insects will be there - so that you can realize that I am ADONAI, right here in the land. 23 Yes, I will distinguish between my people and your people, and this sign will happen by tomorrow."'" 24 ADONAI did it: terrible swarms of insects went into Pharaoh's palace and into all his servants' houses - the insects ruined the entire land of Egypt. Exodus 9:23 Moshe reached out with his staff toward the sky, and ADONAI sent thunder and hail, and fire ran down to the earth. ADONAI caused it to hail on the land of Egypt - 24 it hailed, and fire flashed up with the hail; it was terrible, worse than any hailstorm in all of Egypt since it became a nation. 25 Throughout all the land of Egypt, the hail struck everything in the field, people and animals; and the hail struck every plant growing in the field and broke every tree there. 26 But in the land of Goshen, where the people of Isra'el were, there was no hail The Hebrews were originally given the best land in Egypt. Joseph had prospered Pharaoh and Pharaoh rewarded him and his family. But, many years passed by, Joseph died and a new Pharaoh ruled over Egypt. The favor and blessing of God upon the Israelites continued but the Egyptians became jealous of them. And the Israelites became complacent and presumed upon God that the favor they had would continue forever. In their complacency toward God, they became oppressed by the Egyptians in their own land, Land of Goshen North of Egypt, even though it was the best land. Aren't we a lot like them? Here we are in the best "land" in the world, the land of salvation and blessing because we have Jesus as our Savior, and yet so often we are oppressed.... It took years of oppression and eventually murder of their children, for the Israelites to begin to cry out to God for a deliverer. Finally, the Lord raised up Moses. At first the children of God were affected by all of the plagues and curses that the Lord poured out on Egypt as Moses thundered out the command of God "Let MY people go!" But, after the first plagues, suddenly the Land of Goshen was spared. The pestilence did not touch the place called "drawing near." While the plan of God to take His people to a new place was being worked out, He protected them from the plagues and pestilence. What God wanted for His people in Egypt was long lost, it was time for them to move on to the place of promise. So, Moses and Joshua instructed by God began their journey in the wilderness and eventually took a new territory that included a place called Goshen. This was in the new land the Lord had set apart for them. Remember, Goshen means "drawing near". The Israelites were prevented from drawing near to Him in Egypt as they could not sacrifice to Him, then because of their complacency they were oppressed and prevented from worshipping Him in Goshen, north of Egypt, as well. So, He took them to a new place called “drawing near”! Joshua 11:15-16 15 Moshe had given orders to Y'hoshua, just as ADONAI had given orders to Moshe his servant, and Y'hoshua acted accordingly-he did everything ADONAI had ordered Moshe. 16 So Y'hoshua captured all that land, the hills, the Negev, all the land of Goshen, the Sh'felah, the 'Aravah and the Isra'el hills and Sh'felah, The land was divided among the clans or the tribes of Israel. It is noteworthy that the Tribe of Judah (Praise) received the new Land of Goshen (drawing near) as their inheritance! Joshua 15:20-63 20 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the descendants of Y'hudah, by clans. 21 The cities at the outer part of the tribe of Y'hudah toward the border with Edom in the south were: …49 Danah, Kiryat-Sanna (that is, D'vir), 50 'Anav, Esht'moh, 'Anim, 51 Goshen, Holon and Giloh - eleven cities, together with their villages. 52 Arav, Dumah, Esh'an, 53 Yanum, Beit-Tapuach, Afekah Let’s stop being oppressed in our salvation Saints! It’s time that we broke completely free of Egypt. We have been like the Israelites, living in the best land, but we have allowed the cares and pleasures of this world to oppress and enslave us. There is a new wind blowing in the Spirit. On the breath of God is “Let MY people go!” He wants us to walk out of the old land where we have dwelt in complacency afraid to change and step boldly into the battle for the promised land. How do we battle? As the tribe of Judah!!! We battle in Praise, Worship and Adoration of our God. We battle in repentance and prayer. He bids us come to a new resting place in Him free of the influence of Egypt. We get there by Goshen, by “drawing near” to Him! Simcha Shalom, Cheryl (Rejoice in Peace) |
